He is good

This image came up on Pintrest a few days ago. When I looked up the passage sited (Daniel 3:1-24) I saw it was the story was of when Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were ordered to worship idols/foreign gods. They refused even when King Nebuchadnezzar threatened to throw them into a fire if they did not.

Before they were thrown into the fire they said "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." (Daniel 3:17-18 NIV).

I'm not sure if the person who drew the image in the pin had a different version of the text (I checked a whole lot of versions) but couldn't find any that exact phrase 'and if not, he is still good.'
I think they were going for the understanding behind the passage rather than an exact quote.

As I read it, I realised that this passage captures so amazingly my beliefs and how I strive to live my life. God is Good. He is Perfect. He is Holy and Just and Awesome. His ways are the only Way.

I know these things about God. I know he is able to do miraculous things. I know that He can grant my desires, I know He can take away my temptations, I know He can calm my storms. But even if He does not, I will not turn away from Him. Even if things get worse I will not turn to other gods. I'm here, and even if a fiery furnace comes along, I'm still trusting God's ways are perfect, I'm still following Him.

At the end of the chapter, God does deliver Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the fire, and they come out alive without any injuries. But even if He had not (as has happened to many others throughout history) God is still Good.
