Why play is important - Part 1

I found this quote from an article in last months (May's) Sydney's Child very interesting. The article is called 'The Roots of Resilience' by Professor Paula Barrett.

"They [children] are often pushed to excel in structured activities, instead of being allowed to play freely in natural environments. Young children need time and space for creative play."

I'm passionate about play for children and recapturing the real essence of childhood.

Its interesting isn't it. There was a comment in Last CHild in the Woods that kids in playgrounds are led by the strongest kids, kids who play in natural places are led by the smarter kids. I found that fascinating. I likve your blog - going to read about your growing up on Vanuato this weekend!

I think this is a lovely quote...

I recently watched my uncle playing with my little boy in the garden....he was telling my son a little made up story and asking him if he could hear the fairies chatting under a rock. My little boy's eyes were lit up with sheer delight. I now see him wandering in the garden looking under rocks and talking to the trees.

Nothing like the magic of imagination!
